How To Prevent Damage To Your Driveway When Renting A Roll Off Dumpster

Posted on

The cost for getting a roll off dumpster can run anywhere from between $200 and $1000, depending on how long the rental is for. After spending that kind of money it can be really irritating to find that your driveway has sustained some damage after the dumpster has been removed.  Whether you are doing a construction project such as renovations or remodeling or even if you are only engaging in a garage or basement cleanup and clear out, renting a roll off dumpster can be of great help to you but can become costly if you do not pay attention and take measures to prevent damage once the dumpster has been delivered.

When you consider that the rental company does not take responsibility for any damage that can happen to your property, once the dumpster has been delivered, you need to take the precautions necessary for saving your own driveway. These precautions are specific to the material that was used to pave your driveway in the first place.

Concrete it is

If your driveway has been paved with concrete in less than 28 days, then you should not consider putting the dumpster on it. Freshly paved concrete tends to be softer before it has had a chance to cure and could be damaged by a heavy dumpster, especially as it fills up with debris and other heavy items. However, if your concrete driveway has had a long time to cure (years even) then you can simply use 2 sheets of 4' x 8' plywood to rest the dumpster on. This should be free of screws or nails that can press into the concrete and cause damage from shifting and scraping.

Plywood also gives the additional advantage of evening out the weight distribution of the dumpster so that the weight is not more pronounced on any section of the concrete.

Keep it in the shade

A driveway that has been paved with asphalt comes with additional considerations re temperature. Asphalt tends to get softer in direct sunlight or on hot days in excess of 86F (30C), so it may not be the best place to put your dumpster if you are expecting clear, warm days. If you have no other choice, you may need to find a shady spot where the asphalt is more likely to retain its form. You may also want to use a tarp to place around the dumpster to prevent damage from any debris that might fall out of the dumpster onto the asphalt especially on those areas that may have softened from the heat.

If your asphalt driveway is not up to the test you may want to try putting the dumpster on the roadside. However, you need to ensure that you consult your zoning area for the regulations surrounding that action.
